Arzúa
Galicia
Arzúa is a Galician municipality located in the south of the province of A Coruña, in the heart of Galicia. It is known as the "land of cheese" for its outstanding production of Arzúa-Ulloa cheese with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and is celebrated every year with the popular Festa do Queixo (Queixo Festival), which has been running for over half a century. Furthermore, Arzúa is a key stop on the Camino de Santiago, where the French and Northern Ways meet, making it a meeting point for pilgrims from around the world.
The municipality
Arzúa is one of the most significant towns on the Camino de Santiago, and boasts the most comprehensive green tourism offering in Galicia. Its scenic beauty, variety of natural spaces, quality accommodations, and multiple leisure options in nature make it a green destination in Galicia. It is the municipality in Galicia with the largest number of rural houses. It offers modern restaurants and a wide range of tourist options linked to the enjoyment of traditional artisan products—such as cheese and honey—of extraordinary quality. You can practice adventure sports and explore marked routes to discover popular architecture, with its rich historical and artistic heritage.
We are home to the main Xacobea pilgrimage route. Arzúa is the 13th stop on the French Way and the last major town before Santiago de Compostela. The walk is 16 km through Boente to its exit at A Calzada. In addition to this main route, a second route, the Northern Way, crosses Arzúa and joins the French Way.
As Hortas Waterfall
The As Hortas waterfall is one of the natural boundaries between the municipalities of Arzúa and Touro. It consists of two waterfalls, made of gneiss mixed with quartzite, about 30 meters high, from the Saímes stream. At its top is the Os Agra mill, located on the Touro side.
Curbín Hillfort
This hillfort located just 2 kilometers from the town center has a clear circular profile that suggests the existence of defensive walls and a possible moat.
Ribadiso Bridge and Recreational Area
This complex dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, consisting of the last pilgrims' hospital on the French Way and a medieval bridge. This hospital currently houses the public pilgrims' hostel, founded in 1993. This site forms the recreational area bathed by the Iso River, which has a picnic area in the oak grove.
The cheese
The Arzúa-Ulloa Protected Designation of Origin is a seal of quality that guarantees the origin and traditional production of a soft, mild-flavored cheese made from cow's milk. It protects and promotes cheeses produced in several regions of central Galicia. Since 1989, it has been designated as a Galician Quality Product.
The Festa do Queixo unites gastronomy, music, culture, tradition, and innovation. Every first weekend in March, around 40,000 people gather at an event where cheese and culture have been the centerpieces since 1976. The festival's origins date back to the 17th century. +info: festadoqueixo.org
Queixería Barral

Queixería Barral is a cheese factory established in Arzúa since its inception. This is a story of tradition, family, history, and, above all, hard work. Currently, the second generation has taken over, led by Juan Barral, son of the founders of the first cheese factory. Queixería Barral is a family business that makes cheeses by combining tradition and innovation. Maintaining the time-honored practices that make this a traditional profession, but improving daily thanks to technological innovations.
Galmesan

Galmesán is a family project born from the desire to undertake an initiative that highlights the greatest treasure we have in our land: the rural environment. A return to the origins and lifestyle of our past generations, where by combining tradition and innovation we can offer a product linked to our land and our customs. We are committed to a philosophy of responsible consumption, respecting the product, the ecosystem, and all those involved. This is why we rely on sustainable models that allow for the fair development of all links in the chain and the environment in which they operate.
